Breaking Up with the Cycle of "Cope & Hope" - get out of this harmful cycle to enact real change.

Jillie Johnston July 5, 2022

It’s time to leave the shame spiral of “I’m not doing enough” behind. Our society has used systems to place the responsibility on the individual to negate the responsibility of the whole.

Introducing…

The cycle of COPE & HOPE. It stems from our desire to feel in control – cope – then hope and cope all over again. This keeps people stuck making minimal impact. The concept of “working on yourself” starts as a treatment to numb the pain and help you cope, but quickly becomes self-blame and shame.

It’s a fast pipeline from “I’m responsible for myself” to “everyone should just fix themselves already”.

That’s how the system pulls people back in. We’ve uncovered in this time period of supposed “enlightenment” that even a well-intentioned industry and way of life can be tainted by oppressive systems and ulterior motives. It’s time to learn how to break the cycle of Cope & Hope so we can reimagine systems and have a chance at real change.

Purpose and Desired Outcome

Our purpose to educate and raise awareness around the cycle of "Cope & Hope" and how it's keeping us stuck in the public realm while political agendas are moving forward. We hope through this workshop each participant will see how this cycle has played a part in their life, how they can break it, and how they can use new coping skills to change the systems of oppression at large.
