Digital Nuclear-Weapons-Free Zones: Building advocacy communities with new technologies to reimagine global security.

Danielle McLaughlin July 13, 2022

Ours is a bold idea to remind each other that we all have agency around great systems change and that the matters seemingly left to governments and grandfathers can actually be influenced by emerging communities and creators. The world is stuck in a war economy. At the epicenter of that economy are nuclear weapons – whose 77-year existence has wrought profound harm and inequality across the planet. Building off the massive success of geographic nuclear-weapons-free zones (“NWFZ”) which cover approximately half of the planet, PATH Collective invites you to learn how to declare your digital footprint a nuclear-weapons-free-zone and consider how you might help build a world where peace is profitable: by leveraging the power of Web3, art, and storytelling in service of humanitarian nuclear disarmament.

Purpose and Desired Outcome

We are PATH Collective (Peace, Art, Technology, Humanity). Together with our partner urnowhere.com, a metaverse meeting platform that helps arts, culture, and passionate collaboration thrive at a distance, we would like to launch into the SOCAP community a world first activism and awareness tool designed to advance humanitarian nuclear disarmament. While digital NWFZs are the organizing idea in the session, we hope to have a more broad and robust discussion amongst technologists, artists, and representatives from business around our mission to replace the systems that keep us in conflict with one another. It is PATH Collective’s belief that by leveraging the individual financial sovereignty of Web3 with its unique ability to distribute power across global networks and create financial incentives for cooperation, and the growing community of Web3 artists who are telling stories in new ways and connecting art to activism, we can invert the current global system - where war is profitable - to co-create a permanent peace economy. We hope that people who might not have considered that they have power to effect this kind of systems change will come to see themselves in this work. How might we examine and dismantle the military industrial complex? invert the political and economic incentive structures surrounding nuclear weapons? highlight the experiences and respond to the needs of populations disproportionately negatively impacted by nuclear testing and use? make verified nuclear disarmament both technically possible – in terms of developing new verification technologies and techniques – and financially and politically profitable? Digital NWFZs are a first step - a place where any of us who have dominion over a digital space can make a declaration that was previously – and exclusively – the provenance of governments. Individual agency is at the heart of the systems change we are building. This is a guiding principle not only in digital spaces, but IRL too.
