Meat: it’s one of the world’s largest markets, as well as one of the biggest contributors to climate change. So big, in fact, it will prevent us from getting to net zero emissions even if the entire planet switched entirely to renewable power. In this talk, serial entrepreneur, Joshua March, Co-founder and CEO of SCiFi Foods, will share why he left the world of tech…for biotech applied to food. And why his latest venture—cultivated meat—is enabled by new technologies like synbio and CRISPR,allowing SCiFi to ‘electrify the cow’—and give us all the tasty beef we want, without the climate impact.

Purpose and Desired Outcome
The purpose of this talk is to briefly share the story of SCiFi Foods, expose the opportunity, and inform the audience as to why we need to embrace science and technology when it comes to making more sustainable food options. While plant-based has come a long way in the last decade, most products simply haven't nailed the taste aspect and in order to get consumers to reduce their meat intake, we need to actually MAKE meat...without the animal. And for that, we'll need to use the most cutting-edge methods science and technology can provide. With the FDA's approval of Upside Foods last fall, a major hurdle was passed, bringing validation to the entire space. It's now only a matter of time before we begin to see more companies gain approval and very soon, real meat (minus the animals) hitting plates. Now, we need to educate to not only prepare consumers, but excite those backing these companies, too.
