From Bias to Bonus: Overcoming the Funding Gap for Women Entrepreneurs

Jeff Pilisuk July 12, 2022

Women participating equally with men as entrepreneurs would boost the global economy by $2.5–$5 trillion, according to a 2019 BCG analysis. Forbes cites multiple studies showing that women-founded companies outperformed those founded by men, including delivering higher revenues, stronger growth, less employee turnover, and greater return on equity. Yet, women entrepreneurs have disproportionately greater difficulty accessing capital. Only 2.3% of venture funding went to women-led startups in 2020. Worldwide, the World Bank estimates that “women are left with $1.7 trillion of unmet credit demand.” Recent research by Santa Clara University professor and entrepreneur Maya Ackerman shows that bias plays an enormous role. So how do we move from bias to bonus for women entrepreneurs?
