Hard Conversations and Safe Spaces: Creating Respectful Virtual Communities and Workplaces

Emily Weltman July 13, 2022

If we want to reinvent the workplace, we have to unlearn a LOT about making mistakes and how we talk about them in our work. Setting clear guidelines and boundaries for communications is key, but policies and practices only go so far. To build a culture of solidarity we need to learn the dance of getting it wrong and how to make amends. Authentic apologies are priceless and an easy way to show vulnerability and build trust.

The good news? Repairing is a skill you can learn and practice! Learn about good apologies, practice them, and write our own script that feels authentic for future practice. De-centering yourself can challenge those from dominant cultures used to holding court. With power imbalances, acknowledging and repairing harm are necessary skills for accountability in all types of collaborations.

Purpose and Desired Outcome

In our collective we are “Leading with Purpose.” We want attendees to ask, Is my purpose true leadership? True teamwork? (vs. the spotlight or power). Then amplifying others should be your goal and owning your mistakes should be easy. Scripts are not always a bad thing if you want to build authentic relationships and have hard conversations. The goal of this session is to realize that conscious communication takes practice.
