AI has the potential to become one of the most disruptive technologies in human history, and yet its development is mostly in the hands of a few enormously powerful tech companies with little to no public or regulatory oversight. In companies where shareholder primacy is the dominant governance model, decisions often don’t reflect the public interest. In contrast, B Lab believes that a stakeholder governance model is a crucial corrective to a decision-making and incentive structure that privileges shareholder interests over that of other stakeholders, including workers, customers, communities, and the planet itself. Ultimately, a combination of performance standards, public transparency, and accountable governance are critical to ensure that the immense power of AI is developed in a way that benefits all of us. At SOCAP, we would like to discuss the ways in which stakeholder governance models can help guide the responsible development of AI.
