How do we Operationalize Equity & Access

Jazmin Chavez May 28, 2021

Last summer, we saw at least half a billion dollars committed to racial equity in the wake of the the George Floyd murder and subsequent unrest with continued calls for justice. But where is this money really going and will it change how philanthropy confronts white supremacy and structural racism? If nothing else, 2020 (and 2021) revealed that centuries of bias and decades of disinvestment have made Latinx communities more susceptible to every form of challenge and inequity, with steeper declines and slower climbs back. Government, philanthropy, corporate, and capital markets, none have prioritized Latinx vibrancy, much less giving our communities a fair shake. Come hear from four sector leaders, one from each pillar, about what costs we’ve paid, and what chance we have to truly “build back better.” More than a slogan of the current Administration, can the people who move money around get it to flow where it’s needed? This honest conversation with BIPOC leaders of justice-oriented funding organizations across the US to explore both the internal journeys philanthropy must take, and how this intentional practice leads to a deeper and long-term capacity to partner with frontline, grassroots, BIPOC-serving organizations and movements to shift power to communities.
