Impact Investing at the Intersection of Climate, Health, Racial Equity and Place

Lori Mizuno July 13, 2022

Climate, sustainable, environment and/or green investing are some of the most visible themes in the expanding ESG and impact investing marketplaces. While the amount of capital allocated to these themes continues to climb, the impact has seldom reached U.S. communities of color. Here exposure to climate and other environmental risks perpetuates disparity in life expectancy and other health risks. Hear how impact investors are targeting capital to dismantle these disparities, while also mitigating climate risks and creating local job opportunities. Often the solutions include creative and replicable partnerships between national intermediaries and a range of on the ground partners.

Purpose and Desired Outcome

We would hope to see an increase in: • Greater integration of climate, health and racial justice investment objectives into place-based impact investing strategies. • Greater utilization of place-based strategies by national climate investors, with an emphasis on targeting resources to communities of color where climate risks are most acute and most inequitable. • Expanded partnerships between national climate investors and grassroots organizations within communities of color with high climate risks—to accelerate implementation of tested strategies as well as innovate to ensure strategies that work well for the communities served. We would expect to track this through • Our impact investor client deal pipelines, which reveal investments made with climate, health, racial equity and place-based lenses • The tracking carried out by national climate investing intermediaries as well as fieldbuilding and advocacy partners.
