Investing in Intelligent Cities: Philly, Boston, and Los Angeles

Jaishree Singh July 8, 2022

17AM is democratizing access to capital in impact investing. During this riveting workshop, participants will contribute to 17AM’s investment initiatives in Boston and Los Angeles using stakeholder capitalism and “design thinking.” SOCAP attendees across sectors will discuss how they would collaborate to create “intelligent” cities–namely, those that are healthy, sustainable, and racially equitable.

First, 17AM will walk participants through their anchor research in Philadelphia, Boston, and LA, mentioning investment opportunities with the potential to deliver significant impact to vulnerable populations and attractive investment returns. Participants will then choose their breakout groups (Boston or LA) and 17AM will ask questions about city-specific challenges and possible investment solutions. Participants will diagram their answers on whiteboards and sticky notes and present their insights to the larger group.

Purpose and Desired Outcome

At SOCAP 2022, 17AM seeks to engage with stakeholders to launch investment initiatives in Boston and Los Angeles. 17AM will facilitate a dynamic discussion around which opportunities stakeholders can direct capital and generate positive outcomes, such as population health, economic inclusivity, and climate resilience. This discussion will reveal how stakeholders can apply advanced mechanisms, such as science, technology, and blended financial vehicles to achieve these outcomes. 17AM will seek qualitative feedback on their research and identify stakeholders with great knowledge and enthusiasm for influencing “places.” We envision that this session will galvanize stakeholders to transform Boston and LA into intelligent cities.
