Investing in Positive Outcomes through a Human Rights Approach and Stakeholder Engagement

Kindra Mohr, Esq. July 13, 2022

There is growing attention on the impact investing community with regard to social impact metrics and outcomes and the role of stakeholders throughout the investment lifecycle. Even with issues such as diversity, equity, and inclusion and environmental justice at the forefront, many investors have not yet integrated a human rights approach aligned with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, enabling them to proactively identify and account for social risks, impacts, and opportunities, and therefore maximize positive impact at the investment and systems levels. A fundamental component of that approach is stakeholder engagement, which is not only essential to understanding the investment context, but also can empower communities to drive lasting change. This session will explore practical steps for how investors can integrate a human rights approach, including through stakeholder engagement, into their strategies, decisions, and value chains in order to achieve positive outcomes.
