Investing in the Future of Financial Inclusion

Nadia van de Walle July 13, 2022
  • Participants will introduce themselves
  • Host (BII) will kick off by briefly synthesizing the case for financial inclusion, recapping progress to date including role of social capital initiatives, and highlighting the remaining challenges to improving the financial health of “last mile” consumers or the roughly 10% of households who remain unbanked. She will pause to see what discussion partners have to add. This recap will include learnings from the Banking Inclusion Initiative’s work and that of BII partners at Mocafi, Greenwood, HBCUs, Urban League, Unidos, NAACP, and others.
  • We will then have a dynamic discussion with panelists where they are asked 3-4 questions re: what to do about those challenges and how best can private sector actors support unbanked households; exploring areas of opportunity– asking questions on goals, tactics, collaboration, and maximizing return on investment in terms of revenue and social outcomes.
  • Discussion/Debate between partners on these questions and whether or not inclusion remains an important investment focus
  • We will close by having each partner issue a single call to action to audience.

Purpose and Desired Outcome

1) call attention to the “last mile” of financial inclusion – recapping progress since prior SOCAP discussions, examine the role of the pandemic in advancing digital financial services while leaving some further behind, and spotlight promising opportunities for social investors, nonprofits, and companies in this space. 2) We would measure success by outreach and engagement following the event for BII and any of its partners.
