Student and scholar rescue is a critical component of humanitarian aid. After basic needs (food, water, shelter, health), the priority must be reconnecting and placing displaced persons in safe communities to continue their education. Capital investments are necessary to provide this assistance and to support scholarships and partnerships. This is an investment in the future that will produce generations of societal return. Socially conscious investors can help to shape the New Futures of tomorrow’s leaders, teachers, scientists and entrepreneurs – individuals who will one day return home to rebuild their communities. The Institute of International Education (IIE) has convened an extensive network of partner institutions to rescue students and scholars in crisis for more than 100 years. Rescue efforts require collaboration between public, private and philanthropic organizations. This session will provide insight into IIE’s efforts and a call for renewed collaboration between investors, institutions, and philanthropists to support New Futures for the increasing number of refugees caught in crisis.

Purpose and Desired Outcome
IIE is looking to further the dialogue on what it means to deliver humanitarian assistance by looking at investments that shape our futures. The desired outcome is a reframe of humanitarian work – one that better incorporates education and planning for the future, and enables new partnerships that allow IIE and our network to support more refugee students, scholars, and artists.
