Orange Bonds: A New Asset Class for Investing in Gender Equality

Natasha Garcha July 12, 2022

No crisis is gender-neutral. The COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing conflicts worldwide, and the impending climate crisis have jointly exacerbated the regressive effects on gender equality – as a result, the eradication of the global gender gap is now set back by over a century.

However, the Orange Bond Initiative (OBI) recognizes women, girls, and the LGBTQ+ community as solutions to these issues, not just victims. Orange Bonds are a new asset class for gender-lens investing (orange being the color of the United Nations SDG5: Gender Equality).

Join us as we discuss the Initiative’s commitment to mobilize $10 billion for gender bonds, the multi-stakeholder approach that includes the voices of the Global South and the 99%, and learn how you can get involved to build a gender-empowered financial system.

Purpose and Desired Outcome

The panel will feature three OBI Steering Committee members bringing in their diverse perspectives to reimagine a gender-empowered financial system: an issuer (Impact Investment Exchange, IIX), an investor (Nuveen), and the public sector (United States International Development Finance Corporation (DFC)). The purpose of the panel is to provide an overview of the OBI including insights from market intelligence reports, data-driven impact reporting, democratization tools, and upcoming transactions that the Initiative is developing. We will also share pathways for participation for a range of ecosystem actors who believe in the need for a gender-equal future through innovative, inclusive finance.
