Our Dreams Are In Our Rest: Reimagining cultures of innovation through the values of Black love and justice

William Jackson July 13, 2022

Lack of access to capital and  limited capacity are often cited as the key reasons Black-led organizations struggle and fail. At Village of Wisdom, DEI Works, and Communities in Partnership– three Black-led nonprofits based in Durham,North Carolina–  we’ve found that the conditions for Black innovation are created by rest, love, and collaboration. Via a conversation grounded in radical honesty, Black leaders from the south will discuss the struggles and successes of releasing the vestiges of white supremacy to unlock Black Genius and build sustainable, effective organizations.

Together, these leaders consider

  • Scale vs. Legacy, how building community connection ensures long-lasting impact and scale across time
  • Finding people with the needed skills and values to increase staff and board capacity; and
  • Connecting with funders who understand the mission and that have the capacity for multi-year support.

Purpose and Desired Outcome

This session will help entrepreneurs imagine other ways of building organizations beyond the norms created by capitalism and white supremacy. The speakers will share real examples of how they move beyond the ideas that we must be productive at all costs and that our relationships and well-being are secondary to our bottom line to create cultures of trust, care, and real impact. This session can also help funders consider alternative measures for success when underwriting investments in organizations that are actively reimagining ways of being.
