The threat of digital financial exclusion - is universal financial inclusion finally possible or are we making the same mistakes in the digital world?

Amanda West May 29, 2021

We’re living in a unique moment in history when transformative financial technologies have the potential to create revolutionary new pathways for people to spend, save, send, and secure money. We believe that we can make financial access universal in the 21st century. But to make that a reality, we need to start reimagining the financial system: We need to rebuild it with the world’s most vulnerable at the center of its design, not on the periphery.

As entrepreneurs create powerful applications using technologies like crypto and blockchain and regulators begin proposing rules this emerging fintech, it is critical to assess potential impact on those already excluded from the financial system to ensure we are not reinforcing that exclusion in the digital world and perpetuating cycles of poverty that have the potential to be broken. This is our chance. How do we not blow it?
