The Rockerfeller Foundation just gave a grant to the Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) to work with the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) to allow GIIN to access social and finance information from more than 1800 microfinance institutions that currently report to MIX. This will help finally consolidate data on actual results both socially, financially, and environmentally from lending that MFIs do. They will collect data using XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language. This will allow the reporting of this data to be integrated with current mainstream markets, since this is the standard reporting mechanism used by the FDIC, SEC, and the International Accounting Standards Board regulators throughout Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. This will help the impact investment space acquire hard data about what is going on with the non-financial aspect of returns and be able to compare between different institutions and regions.
