I got to speak at the Social Capital Markets 2019 (@socapmarkets) flagship summit in San Francisco this week. Got to rap with Derrick Morgan (@dmorg91), former @nfl linebacker and founder of KNGDM Impact Fund and DonRay Von (@donrayvon) whose leading the redevelopment of the West End Mall in Atlanta. . We’re all working together on figuring out how to make the OZ legislation work for our communities. Zero ego, and the collaborative vibe and energy of the summit was dope. Proud to connect with and support people who are doing their thing at a high level, while also trying to do “good”. Let’s get to it together and #ownourown collectively 🏁 #ouropportunity #socap19 #community #realestate #LA #growth #building #inspire #tmc

4 Top Takeaways from @socapmarkets: . . 🌍 We have no idea what is "sustainable" as consumers. Fast fashion is the #2 worst industry for fair employment and waste… After oil. And recycling doesn't really work anymore. Also, refrigerators create some of the most environmentally harmful chemicals. #wtf ⁉️ @savagesantini . . 🌍 Brilliant minds are working on: What is the "standard accounting practice" to measure impact? What if we knew how much good each $1 did? For example, "$1 = $20 of impact for product A, vs $1=$2 of impact for product B."… Those measurements are real and in-demand. . . 🌍 Walking the talk as an "impact brand" means telling the story of your product or service… . 1. Clearly 2. So it's about the customer and the cause, not you 3. It takes getting involved with activists or organizations already tackling your target problem 4. It takes getting your team involved in the immediate community around the problem, so the movement starts from the inside out. . . 🌍🎉 Finally… Art and storytelling are becoming the most valued skill sets to rally a tribe and change mindsets. THAT gets me excited!! Loved meeting @godzspeedcommunications @thisisuncharted @sustainablebrands @impacthub_sf 👈👈👈 Amazing human beings pioneering SAVING HUMANITY with social-good and sustainable business. . Felt like meeting some undercover world saving Avengers this trip. Let's GOOOO 🗺️🎉😎 . . #socialentrepreneur #globalgoals #sdgs #un #sustainable #cowork #SOCAP #socap19 #sanfrancisco #fieldnotes #conference #liveagreatstory #consciouscompany #press #impact

One of the proudest moments this month, being able to come back and lift up these inspiring #climate entrepreneurs 🌿 . 6 out of 10 #Americans care about climate change, but many feel paralysed to act in a era of #political discourse 🗣, and extractive #industries 🏭 . #Investing in and supporting #community-driven climate #solutions are key to empowering citizens to #actonclimate . I'm so proud to see the investments we made @echoinggreen be seeded into these inspiring #leaders, and the progress to impact their solutions are making . From local #foodwaste solutions, #legalsupport for climate disobedience, #socialscience data for vulnerable communities, to #electricvehicle charge sharing – these solutions are what we need at a city level . Onwards and upwards building up the movement of climate #changemakers ✊🌎 #socap19

#SOCAP19 Pre-event: Last night was volunteer orientation where we got the chance to ask SOCAP’s Co-Founder, Rosa Lee Harden, some questions. She brought up a really interesting point related to ‘money + meaning’ and where the industry is heading, as well as how it can fall short when we don’t maintain the balance… — At the GIIN Investor Forum in Amsterdam two weeks ago, a room of 1000+ investors was asked the question: “How many times have you pulled money from a project that wasn’t providing the impact it promised?” About 3 hands went up. The room was then asked: “How many times have you pulled money from a project that didn’t have the financial returns you were looking for?” A room full of hands shot up. — Now that impact investing is gaining traction, we need to be focused more than ever on maintaining the balance of finance & impact. Otherwise, we run the risk of falling back into the trap of traditional capital financing. — Photos are from the main stage (Festival Pavilion) during setup and include an indigenous lounge and LATAM lounge for all my Latin America folks out there, in addition to coffee bars and plenty of space for connections to be made #socialimpact #storytelling #impactinvesting #entrepreneurship #socialentrepreneurship @worldcompassfoundation @socapmarkets

#SOCAP19 Part 1: Aside from getting to drive the golf cart while volunteering, there were a number of great conversations worth sharing. One that relates back to our work at @worldcompassfoundation stemmed from the question: What is one of your hidden talents and how it can be used to create a cultural movement? — I ended up talking about my interest in jiu jitsu and how it can be related to developing self-control under pressure, and building resilience in the face of obstacles or opposition. Another group member added that they experienced the same feeling through their interest in deep-sea diving. While deep-sea diving, you have to train yourself not to panic under pressure in the ocean depths. If you do, well you can only imagine… — From these 2 ideas our group came up with the concept of creating a movement of mindfulness where people are encouraged to learn how to maintain a level-head in difficult situations and develop a mindset that allows them to reframe their situations in a way that gives them more control over their narrative. #SOCAPStories #socialimpact #storytelling #impactinvesting #socialentrepreneurship @SOCAPmarkets

#SOCAP19: One of the big insights that stood out today stemmed from items that are considered quite ordinary… I attended a workshop called “Thinking Wrong to Amplify your Impact” where the group was given a couple of different questions to jumpstart creative solutions. // Question 1: Pull an object out of your pocket and relate it to how we can make agriculture more regenerative or sustainable. // There were some really creative ideas that stemmed from objects as random as a compostable dog poop bag to a pair of headphones. // The big insight from this was: You don’t need high tech tools to get people to think differently, all you have to do is empty your pockets (literally). #SOCAPStories #socialimpact #storytelling #impactinvesting #socialentrepreneurship @worldcompassfoundation @socapmarkets
