Advancing climate justice and equity for systems-impacted youth

Mecca Billings Youth Law Center

The effects of climate change will continue to impact all of us over the coming decades, but older, transition aged youth in foster care stand to face some of the gravest harms, and yet they are too often excluded from or underrepresented in conversations about climate change policies and innovations. Let’s use the breadth of experience and expertise in the SoCap community to apply emerging technologies creatively to begin to design child welfare systems that are ready for and responsive to climate-related disruptions and emergencies.

Using foresight tools, we will run a fast-paced, interactive session to inform the broader SoCap community on the specific consequences that climate change will likely have on youth in extended foster care. Working in small groups, we’ll explore how AI and other emerging technologies could help keep ALL young people safe in the coming decades of more climate disruptions.
