Agriculture insurance for smallholder farmers

Denisse Alfaro USDFC

Rural populations, who often rely upon small-scale agriculture, are more likely to have limited to no access to credit or other financing. As smallholder farmers become more vulnerable to shocks brought on by climate change, access to finance, particularly insurance, will be pivotal for ensuring resilience.

In this session, you will learn about Pula, a successful company bridging the gap between insurance companies and millions of smallholder farmers, and how DFC’s support will enable more smallholder farmers in developing countries access insurance services.

Pula is an insurance technology company that designs and implements index-based agriculture insurance solutions for millions of smallholder farmers, protecting them from the impact of climate risks and giving them the confidence to invest in their farms and increase farm profits. With DFC’s support, Pula will establish its reinsurance vehicle to increase its reach to more smallholder farmers in developing countries and design more targeted interventions towards women and other vulnerable populations.
