Blue Horizon: Unveiling the Potential of Ocean Impact Investing

Yihana von Ritter Align Impact

Oceans generate half of the world’s oxygen, sequester a quarter of all carbon emissions, and have absorbed 90% of the excess heat attributable to the Industrial Revolution. Yet, as land-dwelling species, humans often neglect to recognize the myriad of gifts the oceans offer, as well as the challenges lurking beneath their waves. The $2.5 trillion blue economy faces significant human-caused extractive issues: we’ve depleted 90% of the population of large fish, dumped garbage patches the size of Texas in the water, and have destined coral reefs for extinction by 2050. This not only jeopardizes food security and coastal livelihoods but also endangers biodiversity and exacerbates climate change. However, a wealth of solutions exists, from investing in sustainable fisheries and aquaculture to restoring habitats and developing seaweed-based alternatives to plastics. Join LPs, GPs, and entrepreneurs in this dynamic conversation about directing capital swiftly and effectively into a regenerative ocean economy—one that nourishes the world, combats climate change, and revitalizes biodiversity.
