Capital Quest: Navigating the secret passageways of impact funding

Lauren Grattan Mission Driven Finance

In our sector, you hear success stories of inspiring individuals raising millions of dollars for their impact-first funds and projects. You don’t often hear about how difficult raising that capital was, or the time and resources it took to get there. And you rarely hear about the great ideas that didn’t get funded, leaving their communities underinvested. What’s the difference between Group A & Group B? A lot is pure chance—but it doesn’t have to be.

We want all aspiring fund managers and project leaders to know the unspoken perils of raising impact capital and how to overcome them so that communities thrive. MDF, BII, and Impact Charitable will share the tough traps and cheat codes we’ve discovered in an interactive game-like workshop that puts participants in the position of seeking capital for impact-first funds and projects. Our three organizations have had the privilege of working alongside dozens of leaders seeking capital and we have raised impact funds ourselves. We know that community-rooted investment strategies are powerful antidotes to inequality and that it’s incredibly difficult to obtain the right capital to do this necessary work.

In this workshop, participants will get to choose their own fundraising adventures, ranging from traditional sources to philanthropic to government, to experience the hurdles, pitfalls, and occasional joys of raising impact capital.
