Equity: Napoleon Wallace and the Reconstruction of Black Wealth

David Bank ImpactAlpha

The world premiere of a (rough cut) documentary video, “Equity,” along with a (remote) appearance and conversation with Napoleon Wallace, the legendary entrepreneur and innovator of racial equity and wealth-building strategies whose leadership continues even as he faces late-stage ALS.

The documentary tells the story of how Napoleon left his position as NC’s deputy secretary of commerce and asked his wife for two years to pursue his vision of building multiple organizations around a comprehensive strategy to build Black wealth and bridge racial wealth gaps. He soon confronted a devastating diagnosis – and has realized that vision nonetheless. The video, produced with support from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, presents Napoleon’s place-based and multi-pronged strategy for building equity and ownership, through interviews and footage from North Carolina, including leaders of Self-Help, Activest, Partners in Equity, Southern Reconstruction Fund and other initiatives he leads or co-founded, as well as with his family and friends.

Here’s a short trailer from the documentary

We’ll bring in Napoleon himself, via his text-to-voice “Eye Pad,” through which he continues the work and his leadership with his signature sense of humor. For the session, we will dialogue with Napoleon in real-time, via his AI-recovered original voice (through which he narrates the video), as well as through “conversation” with the AI-powered persona Napoleon has developed for the project.
