Less than 2% of climate finance worldwide reaches small-scale food producers. The climate crisis affects women more than men, as it exacerbates existing inequalities in developing countries, and the gap is likely to widen further. There is an opportunity for cost-effective private sector investments that increase the resilience of small-scale food producers against climate shocks by targeting women.

In this session, you will learn about a successful investment story in climate-linked gender-inclusive agriculture, along with the lessons learned to promote more proactive investment in the sector. Science for Society (S4S) is a food processing platform that aims to reduce food waste, empower rural women, and prevent carbon emissions. Despite its small-scale operations in 2018, its highly impactful business model led to a partnership with Shell Foundation. This partnership helped set its growth path, which included raising equity from institutional investors and debt financing from DFC.
