Description

As college costs continue to soar and students seek financing for their higher education, lenders consider Black and African students too risky, as a result of which these students often do not have sufficient access to affordable loans to enroll in the colleges and universities of their dreams.

What is needed is an approach to reduce the risk of loans issued to Black and African students through providing partial risk reserve to lenders, sourced from aligned capital including DAFs, MRI and PRI capital of foundations, and philanthropy. This approach enables them to bet on the future career outcomes of the students, rather than on the thin or poor credit history of their families. This blending of impact and commercial capital reduces lender risk and ensures that economically disadvantaged students can access fair loans and complete their education. Critically, our approach normalizes black excellence in US universities, which are gateways to the global decision-making table.

Drawing on examples from different organizations, the three speakers will show how innovative financing models combining commercial and impact capital can substantially enhance financial inclusion in higher education, particularly benefiting Black and African students from low-to-moderate-income households. They will share examples of how innovation can address systemic biases in traditional lending practices that inaccurately perceive these students as high-risk, restricting their access to affordable student loans. Improved financing mechanisms not only facilitate access to higher education but also integrate diverse talent into global innovation ecosystems and build bridges to shared economic prosperity.
