About SOCAP

What Is SOCAP?

Unlike any other conference in impact, SOCAP convenes the whole ecosystem to catalyze investable and profitable businesses and industries that can solve the greatest challenges of our time. For more than 16 years, the SOCAP conference has been the flagship event and leading convener in the impact economy, gathering more than 100,000 people since our first event. SOCAP24 will take place Oct. 28 through 30, 2024, at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. We invite changemakers from every sector and across the globe who are ready to dig in to help drive urgent change for people and the planet.

SOCAP serves as one of the world’s largest gatherings for the impact ecosystem driving market-based solutions to the world’s most pressing issues. We bring together funders and founders, plus people from philanthropy, government, education, media, finance, science, faith-based organizations, NGOs, creatives, nonprofits, community leaders, and others. We convene a global audience, with representation from 57 countries at SOCAP23.

Our sessions are focused on an annual theme, with tracks categorized by topic and sector to help attendees find the sessions and fellow attendees who can help them achieve their impact goals. By inviting the full field of impact, we create the environment for serendipitous encounters as well as guided learning opportunities to accelerate collaboration that drives the change we seek.

Learn more about our 16-year history in the video below:

Morgan Simon of Candide Group, a longtime attendee and a SOCAP23 speaker, shared in a Money + Meaning podcast episode that the event’s strength lies in its cross-sector design that drives connection and innovation.

“What’s great about SOCAP, in general, is the opportunity to come together as a community and discuss some of the contemporary, actionable issues that we need to address as a sector that’s looking at ways of not only doing business differently but the way that creates systems change across society.”

Listen to the full podcast for more highlights and takeaways from SOCAP23 that we will build from when we convene at SOCAP24.

Why attend SOCAP24?

SOCAP is a break from the walls that historically divide us, including the geographical lines that separate us. This is where movement makers and institutional investors learn from each other; it’s where academics share research with operators on the ground, and where we learn what the rest of the world is really up to. SOCAP forges profound and powerful connections.

Our speakers, attendees, and partners who joined us at SOCAP23 describe the experience, the atmosphere, and the value of being at SOCAP best:

“The SOCAP community is generous and welcoming, so this makes networking opportunities unique for newcomers and veterans alike. Our advice is to come to the event open to connecting, ready to share people’s passion for what they do, and eager to build connections and trust to achieve a better future for all.” Michelle Arevalo-Carpenter, Executive Director of Strategy and Content at SOCAP Global and plenary speaker at SOCAP23.

“There is a truly global spirit here. This may be happening in San Francisco, but you can really feel that energy from Latin America, the energy from Asia, the energy from Africa.” — Durreen Shahnaz, Founder of Impact Investment Exchange (IIX) and IIX Foundation

“You can make some unexpected connections that can really help spark new ideas. This work is all about relationships and community, so SOCAP is an incredible place to make those connections.” — Susie Lee, Program Related Investment Officer at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation

SOCAP24 theme

The Theme for SOCAP24 — Going Deeper: Catalyzing Systems Change

The challenges faced by the impact investment community are intricate and often rooted in systemic causes, demanding adaptive mentalities to address them. However, the implicit and sometimes explicit rules governing the establishment, management, and transactions of investment funds tend to favor simpler, more easily measurable solutions. This tendency is also evident in public narratives surrounding entrepreneurs’ journeys, pitch competitions, and attention-grabbing headlines.

The theme of SOCAP24, Going Deeper: Catalyzing Systems Change, encourages our community to critically examine our practices and challenge ourselves to delve deeper. Depth is our mandate for bringing about structural and irreversible change in the social, political, environmental, and economic systems from which the most pressing challenges emerge. As a community, SOCAP24 is poised to catalyze systemic change.

SOCAP24 Tracks

SOCAP24 sessions will be organized around eight content tracks tied to this theme, each with global and regional perspectives interwoven:

  • Deploying Climate Capital
  • Learning & Capital: Investing in Education

this track is brought to you in partnership with ASA

  • DEI, Ownership and Impact
  • Capital Flows for Impact: Dialogues Around the State of Impact Investment
  • Transforming Health Systems
  • Regenerating Food Systems
  • Catalytic Philanthropy
  • AI = Accelerating Impact

SOCAP24 Content Process

SOCAP23 panel

We take the curation process seriously — it goes beyond selecting and organizing quality presenters and topics. We want our attendees to be a part of the session, a part of the takeaways that build a better future and help advance our community’s global mission.

As in previous years, our content will be sourced from across our community, experts in the industry from around the world, and our Content team. We source about 30% of the content from our SOCAP Open process, which invites anyone from any position, any sector, and any location to suggest topics that need a place at SOCAP24.

We work alongside mission-aligned partners to develop another 30% of our content. We proudly host partners to jointly develop content for our flagship event and year-round as webinars, podcasts, and more. Learn more about these content opportunities on our Partners page.

Experts and thought leaders build the remaining 30% of our agenda. As in 2023, we will again rely on a distributed approach to building our conference programming in 2024. Along with sessions selected through SOCAP Open and co-created with our partners, the sessions within each content track will be curated by our Content Curation Councils, populated by experts from around the world working closely with our content and production teams. We invite you to meet the esteemed members of our SOCAP24 Content Curation Councils!

Hotels

We’re happy to share an opportunity for SOCAP attendees to both save money on hotels and reduce our collective carbon footprint. We’ve partnered again with travel company TripZero (a Certified B Corp) to offset the carbon footprint created by travel to our event.

With the help of our partner hotels, we’ve secured significantly discounted room rates exclusively for attendees. By booking these hotel rooms, we collectively enable TripZero to offset the carbon footprint created by our travel–at no cost to you.

Through the purchase of certified carbon offsets, TripZero funds reforestation and renewable energy projects that remove pollution from the atmosphere. As these projects offset the impact of our travel, they also create lots of benefits for local communities. Interested? Take a moment to watch this project video.

The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts is walking distance from the Powell BART/Muni station, meaning that you can commute from Oakland and the East Bay, or arrive directly from SFO or Oakland airport using public transportation.

Learn about public transit options in San Francisco, including shared bicycles.

If you are coming from the East Bay, from San Francisco Airport or South San Francisco, take BART.

If you are coming from the South Bay, take Caltrain.  The Caltrain station is a 15-20 minute walk from YBCA or you can take the brand new MUNI subway.

To park your bicycle, check the parking garage answer below.

If you have to drive, there are several garages around Yerba Buena.  We do not validate parking.

Please note that San Francisco’s crime rate is driven mostly by car burglaries. Unfortunately, tourists are most often the victims of those car break-ins.  To avoid being part of the statistics, anywhere you are in the city, use common sense and basic precautions:

  • Do not leave anything visible in your car, especially if it is a rental or has an out-of-state license plate.
  • If you have to leave anything in the car, place the items in your trunk before you arrive at the parking place.
  • If you leave electronics in your car, even if they are hidden, make sure to turn them off completely.  Thieves are known to go around parking lots with blue-tooth detectors to help them figure out where there might be hidden electronics.
  • After you close your car, double-check manually to make sure that it is really locked (making sure no one around is using a key jammer.)
  • Finally, if parking in the street, turn your wheels toward the curb (if facing downhill) or away from the curb (if facing uphill). It’s the law in SF, so you may avoid a ticket by doing so, but it’s also a way for thieves to spot out-of-towners.

We kindly request that you leave your luggage at your hotel.  There will be NO place to store bags at the event.

As usual, there is no dress code for SOCAP24.  It’s the West Coast, so comfy business casual is the accepted norm, but wear what is comfortable to you.

Yerba Buena has a warm microclimate, but that doesn’t mean that Karl the fog won’t invite itself toward the end of the day.  It can be quite windy too, so plan to layer.

You will need to walk across campus and we again have activated the garden that separates our venues.  You might need to walk on grass – heels are not recommended unless you are a total heel-pro.

To have an idea of the range of outfits, check this Impact Alpha 2018 article.
